~ A Walking Tour ~ Building Stones of Downtown Fort Worth !

Downtown Fort Worth, well known for its abundant brick structures and the brick pavement of Sundance Square, also has a large variety of buildings made with beautiful building stone. These include federal, county, and city government buildings, some churches, and office buildings constructed during previous oil booms. The buildings exhibit many architectural styles, and use a variety of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Many of the stones have interesting features, including veins, dikes, fossils, and sedimentary structures. Many are distinctive and can be traced back to their quarries. Come join us as we meander through downtown, observing and discussing architecture, history, art, geology, and mineralogy. We will meet in the Hilton Fort Worth Hotel lobby at 1 pm on Sunday, May 20th. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a camera and hand lens if you have them. The weather will probably be sunny and warm, but be prepared for what nature can bring. A hat might be useful, although shade and shelter are always nearby. A guidebook with maps will be provided. We will stop at a pub midway for a short break, and will return to the hotel at 4 pm.ng Tour ~ Building Stones of Downtown Fort Worth !
